[Source] Medicinal material source: the root or whole plant of the Myrsinaceae plant Scutellaria baicalensis.

【Original form】 Shrub, 1-2m high. The stem is finely pubescent when young and has no branches except for the special lateral flower branches. Leaves are alternate; petiole is 1-1.5cm long, pubescent; leaf blade is leathery or nearly papery, oblong to elliptic-lanceolate, 10-15cm long, 2-3.5cm wide, apex is acute or acuminate, base is cuneate, nearly entire or with wavy teeth, tooth tips with marginal glandular dots, margins are curled, dorsal surface is finely pubescent, veins are raised, and except for the margins, there are no glandular dots or the glandular dots are very sparse; lateral veins are 8-12 pairs, connected into marginal veins away from the margins. The umbel inflorescence is solitary or rarely compound, borne on the top of the lateral special flower branches; with a few reduced leaves or leaf-like bracts, finely pubescent; the pedicel is 8-12mm long, reaching 2.5cm when fruiting; the flower is about 5mm long, finely pubescent; the sepals are oblong-lanceolate or ovate, 2-3mm long, ciliate or almost glabrous, with glandular dots; the petals are white, elliptic-ovate, rounded at the apex, with obvious glandular dots, and finely pubescent inside; the stamens are slightly shorter than the petals, the anthers are lanceolate, with a small tip at the apex and glandular dots on the back; the pistil is the same length as the petals, the ovary is ovoid, finely pubescent, with glandular dots; the fruit is spherical, about 6mm in diameter, dark red, with sparse glandular dots, flowering period is May-July, and fruiting period is October-December. Some plants have flowering on the upper branches and fruit ripening on the lower branches.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in valleys and shaded and moist places under forests on hillsides at an altitude of 270-1150m.

[Properties] Identification: The rhizome is slightly swollen, with several stem bases remaining at the upper end, and the surface is gray-brown with irregular wrinkles. The roots are clustered, the lateral roots are cylindrical, irregularly curved, of varying lengths, 5-13 cm in diameter, gray-brown or dark brown, often with dark brown secretions, and with fine longitudinal lines and transverse fractures. It is hard and easy to break. The bark is often separated from the wood in cross section. The bark is thick, accounting for about 1/2 of the cross section, light brown with purple-brown spots, and the wood is light yellow with radial texture. Slight odor, light taste.

【Functions and indications】Relieve rheumatism; promote blood circulation and regulate menstruation; reduce swelling and relieve pain. Mainly used for rheumatic pain, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, traumatic injury, sore throat, and unknown swelling and pain

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 9-1g. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash fresh product for application.
