【English Name】 Bowley Sage Root

[Other names] Red ginseng, red root, running horse grass, seven-mile hemp

[Source] It is the root of Salvia bowleyana Dunn, a plant of the Lamiaceae family .

[Original form] Similar to Salvia miltiorrhiza, the difference is that the root is smaller and the outer skin is gray-red. There are 5 to 7 (9) leaflets, ovate-lanceolate, with acuminate or caudate-acuminate apex, glabrous on both sides except for sparse soft hairs on the veins. The calyx is tubular or nearly tubular; the corolla is short, blue-purple, hidden in or slightly extending from the calyx, and the upper lip is about 1.2 cm long.

[Habitat distribution] Growing on hillsides, forest edges, water sides, etc. Distributed in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Guangdong and Guangxi.

【Properties】 The rhizome is short and thick with a residual stem base. The roots are cylindrical, often slightly curled, gray-brown or gray-red, and 2 to 8 mm in diameter. It is hard, easy to break, with an uneven and horny cross section. The rest is the same as Salvia miltiorrhiza.

[Chemical composition] Contains tanshinone I, tanshinone II, dihydrotanshinone I, tanshinone quinone, methyl tanshinone, cryptotanshinone, protocatechuic acid, protocatechuic aldehyde, etc.
