[Source] It is the root of Celastrus orbiculatus , a plant of the Euonymus species. It is harvested from August to October, cleaned of dirt and sun-dried.

[Properties] The dry roots are cylindrical, slender and curved, with a few fibrous roots, brown in appearance, and irregularly wrinkled. The main root is tough and not easy to break. [Pharmacological action] A red crystal is extracted from the root bark of Ceropegia scabra, which can inhibit Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris and Escherichia coli in vitro; it also has inhibitory effect on Yoshida sarcoma, and the median lethal dose of intraperitoneal injection in mice is 30-60 mg/kg.
