[Source] It is the root of Celastrus orbiculatus , a plant of the Euonymus species. It is harvested from August to October, cleaned of dirt and sun-dried.

[Habitat distribution] Produced in Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan and other places.

[Properties] The dry roots are cylindrical, slender and curved, with a few fibrous roots, brown in appearance, and irregularly wrinkled. The main root is tough and not easy to break. The cross section is yellow-white and fibrous. The fibrous roots are thinner, also cylindrical, brittle and fragrant. The best ones are dry and have thick cork.

【Chemical composition】 Contains celastrol.

[Pharmacological action] A red crystal is extracted from the root bark of Ceropegia scabra, which can inhibit Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris and Escherichia coli in vitro; it also has inhibitory effect on Yoshida sarcoma, and the median lethal dose of intraperitoneal injection in mice is 30-60 mg/kg.

[Preparation] Wash with water, soak thoroughly, slice and dry in the sun.

[Properties and flavors] "Common Chinese Herbal Medicine Formulas": "slightly spicy, warm, non-toxic."

【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind and dampness, promote qi and disperse blood, reduce swelling and detoxify. It is used to treat rheumatic pain in muscles and bones, bruises, vomiting and abdominal pain due to shaqi, carbuncles and swelling.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 0.5-1 liang; or soak in wine. For external use: grind into powder and apply or mash it for application.

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis: stew one liang of Celastrus orientalis root and one pig's foot with half water and half wine. (Quanzhou Materia Medica)
