[Source] It is the root and rhizome of the Asclepiadaceae plant Xuelipantao (some people use the whole plant). Dig up in summer and autumn, remove the above-ground parts and dry them in the sun.

[Original form] Perennial herb, up to 40 to 70 cm tall, with white latex all over. The rhizome is short, with many slender fibrous roots of earthy yellow color. The stem is erect, usually unbranched, densely covered with grayish white short hairs. Leaves are opposite, with short petioles; ovate-elliptic to broadly ovate, 6-10 cm long, 3-6 cm wide, with short pointed, acuminate or obtuse tips, entire margins, and rounded or cuneate bases. Inflorescence axillary, usually cymose; flowers small, light yellow; corolla 5-parted, glabrous, lobes of corona almost as high as style, broadly triangular; stamens 5, 2 pollinia drooping; pistil 1, ovary superior, composed of 2 separate carpels, styles 2, separate. The follicles are lanceolate, glabrous, and 4 to 5 cm long. The seeds are broadly ovate, with a tuft of white hairs on the top, winged edges, and about 2 mm long. Flowering period is from May to June. Fruiting period is July.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in grass on hillsides and on the edge of forests. It is distributed in most parts of the country. Produced in Sichuan.

[Properties] The dried rhizome is about 2 to 3 cm long, with many stem residues arranged side by side on the surface; the appearance is rough and brown; the cross section is yellow-white and full. The fibrous roots are small, clustered around the rhizome, twisted and not straight, about 3 to 5 cm long; the appearance is brown with wrinkles; the texture is fragile, and the cross section is yellow-white. The smell is faint.

【Functions and indications】Nourishes the kidney, strengthens the spleen, and eliminates toxins. It is used to treat chronic cough due to consumptive tuberculosis, edema, leucorrhea, irregular menstruation, scrofula, and scabies.
