[Chemical composition] The root of Datura stramonium contains 0.35% and 0.37% total bioalkaloids, including hyoscyamine, tropine, pseudotropine, etc. The content of bioalkali is related to the thickness of the roots. For example, a black variety of Datura has a root diameter of 0.5 cm and a content of 0.28% (calculated as hyoscyamine), while a root diameter of 0.5 cm has a content of 0.13-0.15%. Another report showed that the content of bioalkaloids in the various parts of Datura stramonium was the lowest in the root. Among all the cultivation stages, the highest bioalkali content in the roots was found during the flowering and fruiting stage (0.77%).
