【Other name】 Lice medicine

[Source] It is the tuberous root of Stemona japonica (Bl.) Miq., a plant of the Stemonaceae family . Dig up in spring and autumn, remove the fibrous roots, blanch in boiling water or steam until there is no white core, take out and dry in the sun.

[Original form] Perennial twining herb. The stem is up to 100cm long. There are 2 to 4 (~5) leaves arranged in whorls, with petioles 1.5 to 3 cm long; leaf blades are ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 3 to 9 cm long, 1.5 to 4 cm wide, and gradually pointed at the tip. The base is round or broadly cuneate, with wavy edges and 5 to 9 veins. Flowers are solitary or arranged in cymes, with the peduncle completely attached to the midrib of the leaf blade; there are 4 tepals, which curl outwards after opening; there is a short drill-shaped appendage at the top of the stamens and anthers. Capsule ovate, slightly flattened. Seeds dark purple-brown. The flowering period is from April to May, and the fruiting period is July.

[Habitat distribution] It grows under shrubs or bamboo forests on shady slopes. Mainly produced in Zhejiang.

[Properties] The root is similar to the upright Stemona, slightly narrow at both ends, with a pale grayish white surface and many irregular wrinkles and transverse wrinkles; it tastes bitter.

[Chemical composition] Contains stemonine, stemonidine, isostemonidine, protostemonine, stemonamine, isostemonamine, etc.

[Nature and flavor] Slightly warm in nature, sweet and bitter in taste.

[Functions and indications] Same as Stemona erecta.
