[Other names] Polygonum multiflorum (Names of Seed Plants), Polygonum aviculare, Polygonum rubrum (Sichuan Chinese Materia Medica).

[Source] It is the whole herb and root of Polygonum spinulosa, a plant of the Polygonaceae family. Harvest during flowering.

[Original morphology] Annual erect herb, 30 to 65 cm tall. Stems smooth and hairless. Leaves are alternate, lanceolate, 8-12 cm long, acuminate at apex, entire, cuneate at base, nearly sessile, green above, sparsely covered with fine hairs, light green below, with densely covered fine spiny hairs on midrib and lateral veins; stipules are tubular, membranous, with veined stripes, and the apex is extended into ciliate margins, which are equal to or slightly longer than the stipules. Terminal or axillary racemes, 6.5-14 cm long, with membranous bracts and ciliate margins; each bract contains 1-2 florets; pedicels usually do not extend out of the bracts; flowers are small, pink or nearly white, with 5-lobed perianth, and lobes are oval; stamens are 8, filaments are linear, and anthers are elliptical; ovary is superior, elliptical, with 3 styles and capitate stigmas. Achenes are triangular, about 2 mm long, dark brown and shiny, and enclosed in persistent perianth. Flowering period is September.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in wet places beside ditches and roadsides. Distributed in Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Taiwan, Sichuan and other places.

[Properties and flavors] "Sichuan Chinese Materia Medica": "Warm in nature, light and slightly spicy, non-toxic."

【Functions and indications】 "Sichuan Chinese Medicine Annals": "Dispels cold and activates blood circulation. Treats measles, wool boils, cold after falls, yin cold and chronic cold."

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water or wine, 2 to 5 qian. For external use: decoct in water and wash.

[Additional prescription] ① To treat measles that does not appear: mash or rub the Polygonum aviculare and roll it outside, or boil it in water and wash with it.

[Note] In addition, plants of the same genus, such as sorrel (see "false polygonum" entry) and silkworm cocoon grass (see "silkworm cocoon grass" entry), are also used as polygonum in Sichuan.
