[Source] The whole herb of the plant Herba Lycopodii of the family Mesenteriaceae. Harvested in summer and autumn.

[Original form] Perennial, tufted herb, 15 to 30 cm high. The stem is weak, with many branches at the top and inverted soft hairs. The leaves are alternate and have long petioles; the leaf blades are triangular-broadly ovate or fan-shaped, 6-18 mm long, 8-20 mm wide, obtuse at the apex, broadly cuneate or truncated at the base, with coarse and blunt teeth on the edges, and scattered white long hairs on both sides with white dot-like protrusions on them. The flowers are white, unisexual, with male inflorescences growing in the leaf axils of branch tips; female inflorescences growing in the upper leaf axils, both with short stalks. Achenes are flat and oval with dot-like protrusions. Flowering period is April. Fruiting period is July.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 0.5 to 1 liang. For external use: mash and apply or soak in vegetable oil for external application.

[Clinical Application] Treatment of burns: Wash and dry the whole herb collected that year, and soak it at room temperature for more than one week at a ratio of 1 jin of whole herb to 10 jin of vegetable oil for later use. Among them, 53 cases were mild (burn area less than 20%, degree I to II), 47 cases were cured or improved, 5 cases were not cured, and 1 case died (a 1-year-old infant with deep degree II up to 15%); 32 cases were moderate (burn area 20-40%, degree II), all of them were cured or improved; 15 cases were severe (burn area 40-95%, degree II and III), 8 cases were cured or improved, 1 case was not cured, and 6 cases died of shock. It is preliminarily believed that the medicated oil has the functions of moisturizing the skin, relieving pain, anti-inflammatory and promoting epithelial growth. The antibacterial test found that the antibacterial effect was not strong, but clinical observations showed that it did have an anti-infection effect.
