[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Scrophulariaceae.

【Original form】 Vine-like shrub. Branches light brown to brown, with numerous prominent lenticels. Leaves are opposite; with short petioles: leaf blades are lanceolate, 5-10cm long, 1-2.5cm wide, with long acuminate tips and cuneate bases. They are dark black on the upper surface when dry, glabrous on both sides when old, and entire. The raceme is on the main stem, 5-6cm long, with glabrous rachis, bracts, pedicels and calyx; bracts are leaf-like, small, and petiolate, and most of them fall off during the fruiting period; flowers are born in pairs in the bract axils; pedicels are 5-8mm long, with a pair of lanceolate bracteoles at the top; calyx is campanulate, 5-6mm long, 5 shallowly lobed, calyx teeth are triangular, with acute tips; corolla is bright red, and the lower lip of the corolla is twice as short as the upper lip; stamens are 4, didyna. The capsule is ovoid, with a sharp tip and glabrous on the outside. The flowering period is June-July, and the fruiting period is autumn.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in low mountain forests.

[Chemical composition] The whole plant contains phenylpropanol glycosides: acteoside, 2-acetylacteoside, poliumoside[1], and brandioside[2]. It also contains dulcitol and mannitol[1].
