The culm is tall and strong, 70 to 150 cm high, sharply triangular, upright and smooth. The leaves are alternate, narrow and linear, 20 to 30 cm long, 6 to 10 mm wide, entire, acuminate at the apex, and sheath-like at the base. It blooms in summer, with compound spike inflorescences. Most of the flower spikes gather at the top of the stem into sessile umbels. The peduncles are of unequal length and have 3 to 4 leaf-like bracts. The spikelets are oblong, about 1 cm long, and the glumes are oblong, slightly membranous, pointed at the apex, and awn-shaped. There are 3 stamens, and the anthers are linear or oblong. The pistil has a long style and a 2-lobed stigma. Achenes triangular obovate, brown. Grown in swamp water. Distributed in Northeast China and Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Taiwan, Guangdong, Guizhou, Sichuan and other places.
