The efficacy and function of Chinese medicine puffball

The efficacy of Chinese medicine is very powerful, and different diseases can be treated by combining different Chinese medicinal materials. The Chinese medicinal herb puffball is a mushroom-like fungus that tastes as tender as tofu and is very delicious. The Chinese medicine puffball has many effects and functions. It can be used to stop bleeding in surgical operations, oral bleeding, nosebleeds, etc. It can also treat frostbite, sore throat, aphonia and other diseases. Let’s learn more about it in detail~

1. Introduction to Puffball

Puffball, commonly known as cow dung mushroom or horseshoe bun, is called medicine bun or horse fart bubble in some places.

It belongs to the basidiomycete family Lycopodiellaceae. When young, it is white and spherical like a mushroom, but larger, delicious and edible, and as tender as tofu.

When old, it is gray-brown and soft, with a slightly tough outer skin and small holes on the top. Dust flies out when it is tapped. The inside is like a sponge and yellowish-brown.

2. Pharmacological effects of puffball

1. Used for traumatic bleeding

For bleeding from cuts, bruises, puncture wounds, etc., you can sprinkle puffball powder or bandage them with puffball pads, puffball bandages, or puffball gauze.

2. Antibacterial

In vitro tests have shown that the decoction of peeled puffball has a certain inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus and Pneumococcus, and also has an inhibitory effect on a few pathogenic fungi.

The decoction contains a large amount of pigment, and after decolorization with activated carbon, its antibacterial effect is greatly reduced.

The squeezed juice of fresh fruiting bodies of Agaricus edulis, when injected into animals, can poison the capillaries and cause internal bleeding.

3. Used for hemostasis in surgical operations

25 cases of prostatectomy, 2 cases of liver and spleen rupture bleeding, 1 case of partial nephrectomy, 3 cases of liver lobectomy, and 1 case of hemostasis during surgery for obstructive jaundice were observed. All cases achieved hemostasis effect without complications or adverse reactions.

The usage of puffball mycelium sponge is basically the same as other animal and plant hemostatic sponges. It does not need to be soaked in water before use. Just stick it directly on the wound and apply a little pressure.

4. Used for hemostasis in stomatology

When the alveolar socket bleeds during tooth extraction, placing a puffball pad to fill the socket can stop the bleeding. If the oral mucosa is torn due to trauma and is bleeding and difficult to sew, or if the gums are bleeding and the wound surface is exposed, sprinkling puffball powder and applying pressure with gauze can also stop the bleeding.

Since puffball pads cannot be completely absorbed by tissues, they cannot be buried in tissues for hemostasis or dead space filling.

5. For nose bleeding

Take a puffball pad and place it on the bleeding spot, applying gentle pressure. According to the observation of 113 cases, 109 cases achieved good results.

6. Treat frostbite

Chilblains: First wash the affected area with warm water to make the area red, then wipe it dry and apply puffball according to the size of the affected area.

If the sore has broken, first apply lithospermum oil (9 grams of lithospermum root, 30 grams of sesame oil. Soak for ten days), then apply puffball and bandage it.

7. Anti-cancer

Animal tests have shown that preparations made from the giant puffball have significant anti-cancer activity.
