[Original form] Miscanthus quinquefolius, also known as: Xuanzai and Maerqian. Perennial herb, 2 to 4 meters high. The rhizome grows horizontally and has leaf sheaths. Galls often grow inside the sheaths, and the swellings are like bamboo shoots. The culms are glabrous, with white powder under the nodes. The leaf sheath is glabrous or has only sparse ciliated edges; the leaf blades are lanceolate-linear; 25 to 60 cm long or longer, 15 to 30 mm wide, acuminate at the apex, rough at the margins, with broad, white main veins. The panicle is terminal, broad and dense, 30-50 cm long, with slender branches; each node has two spikelets, one with a long stalk and the other with a short stalk; the base has white silk hairs, longer than the spikelet; the first glume is acuminate, with 2-3 veins, and the midrib is unclear or absent; the second is similar to the first, with 3 veins, and the midrib is obvious and rough; the lemma of the sterile flower is lanceolate, slightly shorter than the glume; the lemma of the fruiting floret is short-pointed, with two teeth at the apex, and an awn about 1 cm long between the teeth; the palea is ovate, less than 1 mm long. The flowering and fruiting period is from May to November.
