[Source] This product is the dried buds or just-opened flowers of Lonicera japonica Thunb ., Lonicera hypoglauca Miq., Lonicera confusa DC. or Lonicera dasystyla Rehd. of the Caprifoliaceae family . Harvest in early summer before the flowers bloom and dry.

[Properties] Honeysuckle: rod-shaped, thick at the top and thin at the bottom, slightly curved, 2 to 3 cm long, with an upper diameter of about 3 mm and a lower diameter of about 1.5 mm. The surface is yellowish white or greenish white (the color darkens with long storage) and is densely covered with short soft hairs. Occasionally leaf-like bracts are seen. The calyx is green, with 5 lobes at the tip, the lobes are hairy and about 2 mm long. The open corolla is tubular with two-lipped tip; there are 5 stamens attached to the tube wall, yellow; there is 1 pistil and the ovary is glabrous. It has a light fragrance and a light, slightly bitter taste.

[Identification] Take 0.2 g of the powder of this product, add 5 ml of methanol, let it stand for 12 hours, filter, and use the filtrate as the test solution. Take another chlorogenic acid reference substance and add methanol to make a solution containing 1 mg per 1 ml as the reference substance solution. According to the thin layer chromatography method (Appendix Ⅵ B), 10-20 μl of the test sample solution and 10 μl of the reference sample solution were respectively spotted on the same silica gel H thin layer plate with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the adhesive, and the upper layer solution of butyl acetate-formic acid-water (7:2.5:2.5) was used as the developing agent. The plate was developed, taken out, dried, and examined under ultraviolet light (365 nm). In the test sample chromatogram, a fluorescent spot of the same color appears at the corresponding position in the reference sample chromatogram.

It also has a slight dispersing effect while clearing heat, so it can treat exogenous wind-heat or the initial stage of febrile disease when the external symptoms have not been resolved and the internal heat is severe. It is often used together with Forsythia suspensa, Burdock fruit, Mint, etc.
