[Other names] Yibazhua, tiger claw, immortal grass, Wannian pine

[Source] This product is the dried whole herb of Selaginella tamariscina (Beauv.) Spring or Selaginella pulvinata (HooK.et Grev.) Maxim. of the Selaginaceae family . It can be harvested throughout the year, remove the fibrous roots and mud, and dry in the sun.

[Properties] Selaginella: This product is curled up like a fist, 3 to 10 cm long. The branches are clustered, flat and branched, green or brown-yellow, curled inward, and densely covered with scaly leaflets. The leaf tips have long awns. The middle leaves (ventral leaves) are in two rows, ovate-rectangular, arranged obliquely upward, and the leaf margins are membranous with irregular fine serrations. The membranous margins on the back of the dorsal leaves (lateral leaves) are often brown-black. Brown to tan fibrous roots remain at the base, scattered or clustered into short trunks. It is brittle and easily broken. Odorless, light taste.

[Identification] Take 2g of the powder of this product, add 50ml of methanol, heat and reflux for 1 hour, filter, evaporate the filtrate to dryness, add 3ml of anhydrous ethanol to dissolve the residue, and use it as the test solution. Take another 2 g of Selaginella control medicinal material and prepare a control medicinal material solution in the same way. According to the thin layer chromatography method (Appendix Ⅵ B), 3 μl of each of the above two solutions were taken and spotted on the same silica gel G thin layer plate with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the adhesive, and developed with isopropanol-concentrated ammonia test solution-water (13:1:1). After development, the plate was taken out, dried, sprayed with 2% aluminum chloride methanol solution, and examined under ultraviolet light (365 nm). In the chromatogram of the test sample, fluorescent spots of the same color appear at the corresponding positions in the chromatogram of the control medicinal material.
