[Alias] Fat yellow chicken, Huang Ji Lang

[Source] Medicinal material source: It is the root of the long-leaved rosary tree of the Rubiaceae family.

[Original form] The long-leaved rosary is a perennial evergreen shrub, 0.5-1.5m tall. There are branches. The roots are thick, and the lateral roots have many irregular discontinuous swellings. They are fleshy, yellowish brown, transparent, and woody in the center. Leaves are opposite; petiole is 0.3-0.5cm long; leaf blade is lanceolate, 8-15cm long, 2-4cm wide, with long pointed tip, cuneate base, irregular shallow waves or shallow wrinkles on the edge, green on the upper side, light green on the back. The flowers are small and axillary; the calyx is bell-shaped; the corolla is white, the corolla tube is slender, and the tip is 4-lobed; there are 4 stamens; and the stigma is 4-lobed. The drupe is spherical, red when ripe, and contains a yellow-white kernel. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from June to October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows in the shade and wet places under the forest.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The roots are often constricted into a bead-like shape, fleshy, of varying lengths, and about 1 cm in diameter. The surface is yellowish brown and transparent. The wood is exposed at the break of the cortex. The wood is small and has fine longitudinal lines. Slight smell, slightly bitter and astringent taste.

【Nature and flavor】 slightly bitter; sweet; neutral; non-toxic

【Functions and indications】 Tonifies Qi and blood; astringes and stops bleeding. Weak body and blood deficiency; uterine bleeding in women; intestinal bleeding

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 30-240g of fresh product; or grind the dried product into powder, 10-15g.
