[Source] It is the whole herb of the Asteraceae plant, Chrysanthemum vulgare . Harvest in June and July.

[Original form] Perennial vine with branched, creeping aboveground stems and roots at each node. The stem is round and densely covered with stiff short hairs. Leaves are opposite; slightly thick, oblong, sometimes ovate or lanceolate, 1.5-4.5 cm long, 4-14 mm wide, usually obtuse, rarely acute, base cuneate, with 3 large missing teeth on the leading edge and small shallow serrations on the trailing edge; petiole is slender, 3-4 cm long. Inflorescence; involucre hemispherical, bracts ovate, with coarse hairs; ligulate flowers on the margin in one row, female, ligules yellow, 8-11 mm long, 4 mm wide; central tubular flowers bisexual, corolla tubular, 5-toothed, anther tip with appendages, style acute. Achenes are densely bristly, 3.5-4 mm long, 2 mm wide, with 3-4 ridges, truncated at the apex, and without a serrated pappus ring. Flowering period is from July to August.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies. It is used to treat laryngeal ulcer, laryngeal paralysis, diphtheria, whooping cough, cough and wheezing due to lung heat, epistaxis, carbuncle and furuncle.

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decoct in water, 3-6 qian (1-2 liang for fresh); or mash into juice. For external use: mash and apply.

[Additional prescription] ① Treating throat moth: 1 liang of fresh whole herb of Chrysanthemum moth (0.6 qian of dried herb). Fry it with vinegar, then wrap the tip of the chopsticks with sterilized cotton and dip it in the vinegar to wipe the affected area. (Fujian Folk Herbs)

[Clinical Application] Prevention and treatment of diphtheria: 1. Prevention: Use 0.5-1 liang of fresh whole herb of Chrysanthemum morifolium (half for dry ones), wash and chop, add water to boil 20 ml (half for children), take once a day for 3 consecutive days; or squeeze the juice of the whole herb, add vinegar equivalent to 1/4 of the juice and mix well, use a cotton swab dipped in the liquid to apply to the throat and tonsils, 1-2 times a day, for 3-6 consecutive days. ㈡Treatment: Decoct 1-5 liang of Chrysanthemum morifolium (2 liang for children under 3 years old, 3 liang for children over 3 years old, 5 liang for adults) in water and take it 3 times a day. Alternatively, use Chrysanthemum morifolium vinegar to wipe the throat twice a day until the pseudomembrane subsides and other symptoms disappear. Penicillin can be added to mixed cases, and glucose, vitamin C and hormones can be added as appropriate to toxic cases. A total of 443 cases were treated and 439 were cured. The average treatment course for localized cases was 3.8 days, and the average treatment course for II° poisoning cases was 5.5 days. The average fever reduction time for effective cases was 1.2 days, including 1.7 days for II° poisoning cases. The earliest pseudomembrane disappearance was 2.6 days (localized type), and the longest was 5.1 days. The time for bacteria to turn negative was slower in diffuse type cases, at 5.1 days, and the average for the other types was about 2 days. It has also been observed in practice that halothium is effective in treating acute tonsillitis and acute pharyngitis. In addition, it has been reported that 2 liang of fresh chrysanthemum is used with 2 qian of licorice and 5 fen of tongcao as one dose, decocted in water, and taken warm in 3 to 4 times. 1 to 4 doses can be taken continuously per day; chrysanthemum vinegar can be applied topically 2 to 3 times a day. In most cases, penicillin and vitamins B and C are used in combination; in cases with combined myocarditis and laryngeal obstruction, other methods are used in a timely manner to treat the symptoms. A total of 773 cases were treated, 756 were cured and 17 died. In most cases, clinical symptoms are alleviated within 2 to 6 days, and pseudomembranes disappear within 2 to 7 days; the average time for bacteria to turn negative is 4.9 days.
