[Original form] Annual climbing herb, a variety of wax gourd. The stem is slightly square, covered with yellow-brown hairs, and has branched tendrils. Simple leaves are alternate; with long petioles; the leaf blades are broadly ovate or reniform-ovate, with 5 to 7 edges or shallow lobes, pointed at the tip, cordate at the base, and with small serrations on the edges. Flowers are unisexual, monoecious, and solitary in leaf pus; pedicel of male flowers can be more than 10 cm long; calyx is tubular, 5-lobed, and the lobes are triangular-ovate and serrated; corolla is yellow, 5-lobed almost to the base; stamens are 3, and anthers are separate; female pedicel is short; ovary is inferior, oblong, and covered with dirty, yellow coarse hairs in living state, and stigma is 3-lobed and slightly twisted. The gourd is oblong and cylindrical, much smaller than winter melon, 15 to 25 cm long and 4 to 10 cm in diameter. Even when ripe, it is still covered with sparse coarse hairs and has no white waxy powder on the surface. Seeds numerous, long oval. Flowering period is from May to June. Fruiting period is from June to August.
