【Other name】 Capsule root

[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of the Caprifoliaceae plant.

[Original form] Lu Ying is a tall herb or semi-shrub, up to 2m high. The stem has ridges and the pith is white. Leaves are odd-pinnate and opposite; stipules are small, linear or glandular; leaflets are 5-9, with the base of the uppermost pair of leaflets being completely attached to each other, sometimes connected to the terminal leaflet, leaflets are lanceolate, 5-15cm long, 2-4cm wide, with long and acuminate apex, obtuse base, often asymmetrical on both sides, with fine serrations on the margin, and often with 1 or several remote teeth on the margin near the base or below the middle; petiolules are short. Large compound cyme terminal; peduncles and pedicels glabrous to ± pubescent, with yellow cup-shaped glands transformed from sterile flowers; bracts and bracteoles linear to linear-lanceolate, 4-5mm long; flowers small, calyx tube cup-shaped, about 1.5mm long, calyx teeth triangular, about 0.5mm long; corolla radial, corolla tube about 1mm long, corolla lobes ovate, about 2mm long, recurved; anthers yellow or purple; ovary 3-chambered, style extremely short, stigma 3-lobed. The berry is red, nearly spherical, 3-4mm in diameter; there are 2-3 cores, which are ovate, about 2.5mm long, with small wart-like protrusions on the surface. The flowering period is April-May, and the fruiting period is August-September.

[Properties] Identification of properties: It is irregularly curved, long and branched, 15-30cm long, some are up to 50cm long, and 4-7mm in diameter. The surface is gray to grayish yellow, with fine and slightly twisted longitudinal lines and long horizontal lenticels; occasionally there are fine fibrous roots. It is hard or slightly soft and tough, difficult to break. The cut bark is grayish yellowish brown, while the wood is fibrous, yellowish white, and easily torn apart from the bark. Slight odor, light taste.

[Processing] Take the original medicinal material, remove impurities, wash, soak, and cut into thick slices. Medicinal properties: Round thick slices, yellowish white, with enlarged nodes or fibrous roots. Slight smell, slightly bitter taste. Store in a dry container in a ventilated and dry place.

【Nature and flavor】 Sweet; sour; neutral

【Functions and indications】Dispel wind; promote dampness; activate blood circulation; disperse blood stasis; stop bleeding. It is mainly used for rheumatic pain, headache, back pain, menstrual swelling, stranguria, leucorrhea, traumatic injury, fracture, accumulation of symptoms, hemoptysis, hematemesis, pruritus caused by urticaria, and sores.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 9-15g; fresh product, 30-60g. For external use: take appropriate amount, mash and apply; or decoct in water for washing.
