Leaves are alternate; petioles are 4-8cm long, nearly glabrous, but with long stiff hairs in the grooves above; stipules are oblique, ovate, serrated, and gradually pointed at the apex; leaves are circular-cordate or reniform, with 5-7 crenate-obtuse lobes, 5-12cm long, almost equal in width, nearly cordate to circular at the base, with crenate serrations on the margins, glabrous on both sides or sparsely covered with short, rough hairs on the veins only. The flowers are clustered with 3-11 flowers, and the pedicels are 1-2cm long, glabrous or sparsely covered with coarse hairs; the bracts are 3, oblong, 3-4mm long, 1-2mm wide, with rounded tips, and sparsely covered with soft hairs; the calyx is cup-shaped, 6-7mm long, with 5 calyx lobes, broadly triangular, and covered with sparse star-shaped soft hairs on both sides; the flowers are purple-red or white, 3.5-4cm in diameter, with 5 petals, spoon-shaped, about 2cm long, slightly emarginate at the tip, and with claws and beards; the stamen column is 8-10mm long, covered with prickles, and the filaments are glabrous; the style has 9-11 branches and is covered with fine hairs. The fruit is oblate, about 5-7mm in diameter, with 9-11 valves, kidney-shaped, and covered with soft hairs. The seeds are dark brown, kidney-shaped, and 2 mm long.
