Leaf stalks; leaf blades linear, leathery, longer than stalks, 30-50cm long, pa 8-12mm, with long pointed tips, and leaf sheaths bare. The panicle is compound and 5-30cm long; the panicles of lateral branches are 5-6cm long; the bracts are leaf-like, brown, longer than the inflorescence, and have bracts; the spikelets are extremely numerous, male and female in sequence, cylindrical, 1.5-6cm long; the scales of female flowers are oblong-ovate, about 3mm long, brown-red, with narrow white membranous edges, obtuse at the apex, with awns, and 1-3 veins. The fruit capsule is obovate, slightly longer than the scales, swollen, berry-like, blood-red, with many veins, and the tip is contracted into a short beak with 2 small teeth at the tip. The nutlets are ovate-triangular, brown-red, and enclosed in persistent capsules. Flowering and fruiting period is from March to June.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown by rivers, villages, roadsides and sparse woods on hillsides.
