[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Viola formosanus, a plant of the Violaceae family.

[Original morphology] Perennial herb without above-ground stems. With vertical or ascending rhizomes. The stolons are elongated, terminally borne with rosettes of leaves and sometimes flowers. Leaves are basal: leaf blades are slender, 1-10cm long, glabrous or slightly covered with short hairs; stipules are fused to the petiole at the base, and the margins of the free parts are fringed or torn; leaf blades are broadly cordate or nearly rounded, 1-3cm long and wide, each 1-3cm long and wide, with an acute or obtuse apex, a deeply cordate base, crenate margins, glabrous or sparsely covered with short hairs on both sides, and usually light-colored below. The corolla is 1.5-2cm in diameter; the pedicel is relatively long, sometimes up to 15cm long, with a deeper punctum at the tip, a cuneate base, and no hairs inside; the petals below are larger, 1.5cm long, with a deeper punctum or 2 shallow lobes at the tip; the spur is emarginate and slightly curved; the style is nearly erect, with a short beak in front of the stigma. Capsule spherical or ellipsoidal.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in mountain forest areas at an altitude of 1400-2500m.

【Functions and indications】 Strengthens the spleen and stimulates appetite; dispels wind and relieves cough; promotes blood circulation and unblocks menstruation. It is used for children's poor appetite, cold, cough, dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, rheumatism

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 9-15g; fresh product 30-60g; or mash into juice.
