[Source] Medicinal material source: The stems and roots of Ribes stenocarpa of the Saxifragaceae family.

[Original form] Ribes angustifolia is a deciduous shrub, about 1m tall. Old branches are gray to gray-brown, peeling, and the branchlets are gray-yellow with thorns. The thorns are 9-24cm long and often clustered in 3. Leaves are opposite; petioles are 0.5-3.5cm long, sparsely covered with glandular hairs; leaf blades are round pentagonal or round ovate, palmately 3-lobed, 3-3.5cm wide, with a cordate or cuneate base, lobes with sharp tips and rounded teeth on the edges, and sparse short soft hairs on both sides and edges. The flowers are rose-colored, bisexual, and clustered in 1-3 in leaf axils; the pedicels are 3-7mm long; the calyx tube is short and thick, 2-3mm long, with 5 oblong lobes; the petals are 5, rhombus-shaped, half the length of the sepals; the stamens are 5, longer than the petals and alternate with the petals; the ovary is inferior, 1-chambered, with 2 styles and many ovules. The berries are thornless, narrow and yellowish brown, with a persistent calyx tube at the tip. Flowering and fruiting period is July to September.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in mountain coniferous forests or beside streams.

[Properties] The stems and branches are slender cylindrical, irregularly twisted and of varying lengths, with a diameter of 2-5mm. The surface is gray-brown with long thorns, 1-1.5 cm long, slightly swollen at the nodes, with transverse wrinkles, and no branch or leaf marks. It is hard, not easy to break, has a floury cross section, the wood is yellowish white, and the pith is hollow. It has a faint smell and a bitter taste.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies. It is mainly used to treat boils, blisters, unknown swellings, itchy eczema, and icteric hepatitis.
