[Original form] Perennial herb, 60-100cm high, usually 80cm. There are spherical tubers underground. The stem is erect and strong, much-branched, smooth, and has swollen nodes. Bulbs grow in leaf axils; leaves are alternate, petioles are 5-12cm long; stipules are lanceolate; leaf blades are obliquely ovate, 8-20cm long, 6-18cm wide, with pointed apex and oblique base. There are fine spines on both sides, the underside of the leaves and the petiole are purple-red, and there are fine sharp teeth on the edges. Flowers are unisexual, pink to red, 2.5-3.5cm in diameter; monoecious, in axillary strong cymes; 4 male tepals, the outer 2 of which are larger and round; numerous stamens, gathered into a capitate; filaments forming a common petiole; anthers yellow; 5 female tepals, the inner of which are smaller; 1 pistil, divided into 3 carpels; ovary inferior; style trifurcated, stigma twisted. The capsule is 1.5-3 cm long and has three wings, one of which is usually larger. The flowering period is July-August, and the fruiting period is October-November.
