[Source] Medicinal material source: The tuberous root of the climbing plant Asparagus cochinchinensis of the Liliaceae family.

[Original form] Asparagus cochinchinensis, climbing plant. The tuber is nearly cylindrical, fleshy, and 7-15mm in diameter. The stem is branched, smooth and hairless, about 20-100 cm long, with longitudinal convex patterns on the branches and often cartilaginous teeth. The leaf-like branches are clustered in groups of 4-10, flat and cylindrical, with a few edges, straight or arc-shaped, 4-20mm long, about 0.5mm in diameter, with cartilaginous teeth, or not obvious; the leaves are scaly, with short thorn-like spurs at the base, 1-2mm long, and sometimes the spurs are not obvious. The flowers are purplish brown, usually 2-4 in axillary; the pedicels are 3-6mm long, with the joint located near the middle; the perianth of male flowers is 7mm long, with the filaments attached to the perianth segments below the middle; the female flowers are smaller, with a perianth of about 3mm long. The berries are red when ripe, 6-7mm in diameter, and usually contain 4-5 seeds. The flowering period is May-June, and the fruiting period is August.

【Habitat distribution】Ecological environment: Grown on the slopes of medium and low mountains. In the bushes or in the fields or near the village.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The tuber is long and fusiform, fleshy, and thick, up to 10 cm long and 7-12 mm in diameter. The surface has fine longitudinal lines and grooves of varying depths, and is yellowish-white to brownish-yellow. The texture is soft and sticky; the smell is slight and the taste is light.

[Pharmacological action] 0.25% water extract of the roots has a killing effect on the larvae of Culex pipiens, with a killing rate of 98%.

【Functions and indications】Relieve rheumatism and relieve itching. Mainly used for rheumatism, eczema, skin itching, toxic swelling and ulcers

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 6-9g. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application.
