[Original morphology] 1. Asarum californica is a perennial herb with scattered soft hairs all over the plant. The rhizome is thick. The petiole is 5-20cm long and hairy; the bud leaf is ovate or ovate-lanceolate, with dense soft hairs on the back and edges; the leaf blade is broadly ovate, triangular-ovate or ovate-cordate, 4-10cm long, 3.5-10cm wide, with an acute to long acuminate apex, auriculate or cordate base, dark green above, sparsely covered with long soft hairs, and denser hairs beneath. The perianth is green with purple-red dot-shaped short hairs; the pedicel is 1-2 cm long and pubescent; the perianth lobes are erect, slightly constricted at the throat, with pubescent and longitudinal striations on the inner wall, the apex of the perianth lobes suddenly narrows into a slender tail tip, the tail can be up to 1.2 cm long, and the outside is pubescent; the stamens are longer than the styles, the filaments are longer than the anthers, the connective is extended, cone-shaped or tongue-shaped; the ovary is inferior, the style tip is 6-lobed, and the stigma is terminal. The capsule is nearly spherical, about 1.8 cm in diameter, with persistent perianth. The flowering period is from April to May, and in Yunnan and Guangxi it can be as late as November.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: 1. Grown in shady and moist places under forests or beside streams.

[Properties] Identification of properties (1) The rhizome of Asarum caudatum is irregularly cylindrical, with short branches, 3-12 cm long and 2-6 mm in diameter; the surface is gray-brown, rough, with ring-shaped nodes; the internodes are 0.3-1.2 cm long. The roots are slender, densely growing on nodes, 1mm in diameter; the surface is light gray with longitudinal wrinkles. It is brittle, easy to break, and has a grayish-yellow cross section. The leaves are broadly ovate, triangular-ovate, or ovate-cordate, dark green above with sparse soft hairs and denser hairs beneath. It has a fragrant aroma, spicy taste, and a slight numbing sensation on the tongue.

【Chemical composition】 The whole plant of Asarum ciliata (dry product) contains 0.4% volatile oil. The components of the volatile oil are: bornool, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol, naphthalene, bornyl acetate, safrole, terpinyl acetate, methyl eugenol, methyl isoeugenol, myristicin, elemicin and isoelemicin.

【Functions and indications】Warms the meridians and dispels cold; resolves phlegm and relieves cough; reduces swelling and relieves pain. It is mainly used for colds, headaches, coughs and asthma, rheumatism, injuries from falls, mouth sores, snake bites, sores and swellings.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 3-6g. For external use: Take appropriate amount of fresh grass and mash it for application.
