Paulownia, tree, up to 30m tall. The bark is gray-brown, and the young branches, leaves, petioles, various parts of the inflorescence and young fruits are covered with yellow-brown star-shaped hairs. Petiole up to 12cm long; leaf blade long ovate-cordate, up to 20cm long, with acuminate or acute tip, cordate base, and entire margin. The inflorescence is narrow and almost cylindrical, about 25cm long; the cymes have 3-8 flowers, with buds in the autumn of the first year and open before the leaves; the peduncle is nearly as long as the pedicel; the calyx is obconical, 2-2.5cm long, 5-lobed, 1-3 of which are ovate, and become narrow triangles in the fruiting period; the corolla is tubular-funnel-shaped, white with purple spots inside, up to 10cm long, the tube is straight and gradually expands upward, the upper lip is narrow, 2-lobed, and curled, the lower lip is 3-lobed, and the tips have tooth-like teeth or concave heads; there are 4 stamens, didynamous, hidden in the corolla tube; the ovary is 2-chambered, the style is slender and inward-curved. Capsule woody, oblong, 6-10cm long, 2-lobed. Seeds numerous, flat and winged. The flowering period is February-March, and the fruiting period is August-September. [Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: 1. Grown in low-altitude hillsides, forests, valleys and wastelands, either wild or cultivated. [Properties] Identification of properties: The surface is gray-brown with irregular longitudinal fissures; the twigs have obvious lenticels, often with sticky short glandular hairs. The taste is light and slightly sweet. 【Chemical composition】 1. Paulownia: The bark contains syringin. [Pharmacological action] 1. Antibacterial and antiviral effects: ether and ethanol of Paulownia tomentosa bark. The propanol extracts all have antibacterial activity. In vitro antibacterial tests have shown that the Paulownia tomentosa extract has a stronger effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, followed by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and a weaker effect on Escherichia coli. The butanol extract of Paulownia tomentosa stem has antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus-like bacteria. Its main active ingredient is bignoniacea glycoside I, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the above bacteria is 150μg/ml. Several crystals isolated from Paulownia tomentosa leaves have certain inhibitory effects on 8 common bacteria, influenza virus and Sendai virus. The dsesamin contained in the wood of Paulownia tomentosa has inhibitory effects on influenza virus, Sendai virus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of ursolic acid contained in Paulownia tomentosa leaves against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and yeast in vitro are 50-400μg/ml, 200-800μg/ml and 100-700μg/ml respectively. Paulownia flower extract also has a strong antibacterial effect. 【Toxicity】 The median lethal dose of ursolic acid injected intraperitoneally into mice is 680 mg/kg. 【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; cold 【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind and dampness; reduce swelling and detoxify. It is used for rheumatism, heat, gonorrhea, eczema, hemorrhoids, intestinal bleeding, swelling and pain caused by trauma, and fractures. 【Usage and Dosage】 Take as decoction: 15-30g. For external use: take appropriate amount of fresh product, mash it and apply on the affected area; or boil the juice and apply on the affected area.
