[Source] Medicinal material source: The rhizome of the konjac plant Dioscorea konjac, Dioscorea family.

[Original form] Arrowroot schizonepeta is a perennial herb. The rhizome is tuberous, with obvious segments and numerous fibrous roots. The leaves are basal, with long petioles, 10-30cm long, base expanded into a sheath-like shape, embracing the stem, and fleshy; the leaf blades are oblong, 20-50cm long, 7-14cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, cuneate at the base, decurrent, entire, green above, light green below, and glabrous on both sides; the main vein is thick and protruding downward, and the lateral veins are pinnate and parallel. The scape emerges from the leaf cluster; there are 4 dark purple involucral bracts; several flowers grow in clusters, arranged in umbels, often drooping; the bracts are linear, about 10 cm long; the perianth has 6 lobes, purple-brown, the inner lobes are wider, with a small tip at the tip; there are 6 stamens, the filaments are hooded at the top, the stigma is curved into an umbel, 3-lobed, and each lobe has 2 shallow lobes. The berries are fleshy, oval, with 6 edges, and purple-brown when ripe; the seeds are kidney-shaped, about 3 mm in diameter. The flowering and fruiting period is from April to November.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows in the shade and wet places under the forest.

[Chemical composition] The rhizome contains steroidal saponins diosgenin-3-D-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(l→2)-[O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(l→3)]-O-β-D-glucopyranoside}, as well as stigmasterol and daucosterin.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; Cool; Slightly toxic

【Channel】 Stomach; spleen; liver meridian

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies; regulates qi and relieves pain. Gastroenteritis; gastric and duodenal ulcers; indigestion; dysentery; hepatitis; boils; sore throat; burns and scalds

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 9-15g. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application.
