The efficacy and function of yellow root

Huanggen is one of the common traditional Chinese medicines in our country. Huanggen has a very long history of medicinal use. Many ancient medical books have records of Huanggen. Huanggen has good edible and medicinal value. Let’s take a look.

[Other names] Dogbone, white dogbone, black root

[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of the Rubiaceae plant Nanshanhua.

[Original form] Nanshan flower, shrub, 1-3m high. The whole plant is hairless. The twigs are quadrangular and yellow when dry. Leaves are opposite, thin leathery; petioles are 5-10mm long with grooves on them; stipules are triangular, 2-3mm long, with acute tips; leaf blades are oblong, elliptic-lanceolate or oblanceolate, 7-15cm long, 2-5cm wide, gradually pointed at the tips, and shiny on both sides. Umbels are axillary near branch tops, with several to many flowers; peduncle is short or nearly absent; flowers are fragrant, with pedicels, 15-20(-30)mm long, weak; calyx is cup-shaped, about 3mm long, with limbs truncated; corolla is tubular, 2-2.5cm long, with 5 (rarely 4) lobes, narrowly lanceolate, widely spreading: anthers are not exposed. The drupe is nearly spherical, about 8mm in diameter, and dark purple when ripe. Flowering period is April-May.

【Habitat distribution】Ecological environment: Growing in mixed woods.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The root is cylindrical, often irregularly twisted, branched, or cut into irregular pieces, varying in length, thickness, and diameter of 0.5-4cm. The surface is yellow-brown with longitudinal wrinkles and some with longitudinal cracks. The cork is easy to fall off, and the fallen part appears ochre red. It is hard and not easy to break. The bark in the cross section is extremely thin and brown-yellow. The wood is well-developed and khaki in color, with fine concentric rings and radial texture. Slight odor, light taste. The best ones are those with thick roots and yellow color.

【Pharmacological action】 1. Effect on the heart: Different doses (1g/100ml, 1.5g/100ml, 3.5g/100ml perfusion fluid) of Rhizoma Cyperi can reduce the myocardial contractility, coronary flow and heart rate of normal isolated rat hearts, and weaken the tolerance of isolated rat hearts to hypoxia. The extent to which Huanggen inhibits the isolated rat heart function increases with increasing doses or prolonged administration time. This phenomenon may be related to the high content of aluminum and manganese in Huanggen, which can block the influx of extracellular calcium slow channels to a certain extent, reduce intracellular calcium concentration, and thus inhibit myocardial contractility.

【Toxicity】 Long-term use of this product has little toxic and side effects. A small number of patients experienced dry mouth, irregular white blood cell nuclei, and vacuoles in the cytoplasm after taking the medicine. Huanggen has an inhibitory effect on the heart. For patients with silicosis, cor pulmonale, and severe heart damage, when the condition improves and myocardial hypoxia is relieved, the heart function recovery is not ideal. The inhibitory effect of Huanggen on the heart should be considered. At this time, the drug should be discontinued or the dosage should be reduced as appropriate.

【Identification】 1. The freshly cut surface of this product shows light blue-white fluorescence when observed under ultraviolet light (365nm).

【Nature and flavor】 Slightly bitter; cool

【Functions and indications】 Cools blood and stops bleeding; promotes the flow of dampness and reduces jaundice; disperses blood stasis and strengthens tendons. Mainly used for gum bleeding, anemia, hepatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, and urinary tract infection

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 10-30g.
