[Source] Medicinal material source: The root of Scutellaria baicalensis, a plant of the Lamiaceae family.

[Original form] Scutellaria baicalensis, perennial herb, about 35cm tall. The stem is erect, quadrangular, grooved and covered with very short soft hairs along the edges. Leaves opposite; petiole extremely short; leaf blade thin, lanceolate or triangular-lanceolate, 1.7-3.3cm long, 3-6mm wide, obtuse at apex, with inconspicuous shallow cordate or nearly truncate at the base, glabrous or scattered with fine rough hairs on the upper surface, with very short soft hairs only on the veins and leaf margins on the lower surface, and scattered granular glands on the rest. Flowers are solitary in the leaf axils above the middle of the stem, leaning to one side; calyx is about 4mm long when in bloom, densely covered with short soft lines on the outside, with very small scutes, and about 6mm long when in fruit; corolla is purple, covered with short soft hairs on the outside, the base of the corolla tube is about 1.5mm wide, reaching 8mm at the throat, the corolla brim is two-lipped, the upper lip is gray, slightly emarginate at the apex, and the middle lobe of the lower lip is nearly oblate; there are 4 stamens, all internal; the style is slender and flat, the disk is annular, and the ovary is 4-lobed, with lobes of equal size. The nutlets are yellowish brown, ovoid, with tubercle-like protrusions, and a navel at the base of the ventral surface.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: scattered on river rocks or sedge swamp meadows.

[Chemical composition] The root and whole herb of Scutellaria baicalensis contain seven kinds of baicalins; ikonnikoside I, scutellarin, baicalin, norwogonion-7-O-glucuronide, norwogonin-8-O-glucuronide, and 5,2-dihydroxy-7-O-glucuronylflavone.
