【English name】 BULBUS FRITILARIAE HUPEHENSIS

[Source] This product is the dried bulb of Fritillaria hupehensis Hsiao et KCHsia, a plant of the Liliaceae family . The plants are dug up after they wither in early summer, soaked in lime water, and fumigated with sulfur; or soaked in clean water and dried.

[Properties] This product is oblate spherical, 0.8-2.2cm high, 0.8-3.5cm in diameter, and the surface is off-white to light brown. The outer scales have two petals, which are thick, slightly kidney-shaped, or of different sizes, with the larger petal tightly embracing the smaller one, and the apex closed or cracked. There are 2 to 6 scale leaves and shrunken stems inside. The inner surface is light yellow to off-white, with a sunken base and some light brown epidermis and a few fibrous roots remaining. The single scale leaf is in the shape of a gold ingot, 2.5 to 3.2 cm long and 1.8 to 2 cm in diameter. It is brittle, white in cross section and powdery. It has a faint smell and a bitter taste.

【Identification】 (1) The powder of this product is light brown-yellow. There are many starch granules, which are broadly oval, oblong or quasi-circular, with a diameter of 7-54μm, and are dot-shaped, herringbone-shaped, fissure-shaped or double-branched horsetail-shaped, with obvious and fine layers; occasionally, compound granules are seen, which are composed of 2-3 granules and are small in shape. The epidermal cells are square or polygonal, and the antipodal wall is irregularly thickened in a beaded manner; stomata can sometimes be seen, which are oblate and 54-62μm in diameter, and there are 4-5 accessory cells. Calcium oxalate crystals are prismatic, square, granular or clustered, with a diameter of up to 50 μm. The catheter has threads or rings, with a diameter of 6 to 20 μm.
