[Original form] Annual herb. The stem is 30-120cm tall and the whole plant is covered with prickles. The leaves are 5-15cm long, with petioles equal to the leaf blades; stipules are 2-lobed; the leaf blades are cordate-ovate, with sharp tips, cordate or cuneate bases, and coarsely serrated margins; there are 3 basal veins and the texture is soft. The panicles are axillary, often longer than the petioles. The flowers are unisexual. The male flowers have 4-5 ovate-lanceolate perianths and 4-5 stamens. The female flowers have cup-shaped perianths, 4-lobed or toothed, with petioles. The ovary is oblique and the style is irregularly 3-lobed. Achenes slightly flat. The flowering period is July-August, and the fruiting period is August-September.
