[Source] Medicinal material source: The stems and vines of the legume plant Caulis Sanguisorba officinalis.

[Original form] Red blood vine climbing shrub. The branches are purple-brown at first and slightly pubescent, then gray, glabrous, and with dense linear patterns. The petiole is 2-5cm long, slender, with swollen base and hairy; the stipules are awl-shaped, 3mm long, and persistent; the leaflets are oblong-elliptic, with the terminal leaflet 5-8cm long and 2-3cm wide, and the lateral leaflets slightly smaller, with the tip suddenly contracted to a blunt tip, the base rounded or broadly obtuse, glabrous above, shiny when old, and strigose on the back. The panicles are axillary, densely brown strigose, 8-10cm long, with 2 bracts, awl-shaped, 1mm long, 7-8mm long, slightly dense, and pedicels 3-4mm long and hairy; the calyx is campanulate, covered with short soft hairs, 5-lobed, and the teeth are ovate; the corolla is purple-red, each petal has slender claws, the standard petal is oblate, light concave, the wing petals are obovate-oblong, with downward ears, and the keel petal is oblong and without ears; the ovary is linear-oblong, covered with strigose hairs, and the style is glabrous. The pod is sessile, obliquely oblong, 7-9cm long, 2-2.3cm wide below the middle, narrower at the top, with thin lobes with fine reticular veins, covered with brown long soft hairs, and the dorsal suture is densely covered with pubescence; the seeds are oblong, flat, about 3cm long, and have a black seed coat.

【Habitat distribution】Ecological environment: Grown in dense forests in valleys.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The stem is cylindrical, slightly curved, 3.3-4.0cm in diameter, gray-brown in surface, with obvious longitudinal grooves and fine transverse rings, the lenticels are warty, dot-shaped or oval, small, hard, difficult to break, and the broken surface is irregularly lobed. The secretions of the cortex in the cross section are black-brown, the wood is reddish-brown, the wood parenchyma is darker in color, arranged in wavy layers, the vessels are hole-like, irregularly arranged, the pith is small, the odor is slight, and the taste is light.
