[Source] Medicinal material source: The root bark of the Meliaceae plant Toona sinensis.

[Original form] Toona sinensis is a deciduous or nearly evergreen tree, up to 30m tall. The bark is dark green to dark brown; the twigs are red and have lenticels. Even-pinnate compound leaves, 30-40cm long, petiole 6-10cm long; leaflets 6-12 pairs, opposite or nearly opposite, petiole 8-12mm long; leaf blade lanceolate, ovate or oblong-lanceolate, apex acuminate, base unequal, one side rounded, the other side cuneate, upper side slightly longer, entire, back of leaf with tufts of hairs along veins and in vein axils; lateral veins slender. Flowers bisexual, panicles nearly as long as leaves, pubescent. The flowers are white with short petioles; sepals are ovate, pubescent on the outside and ciliate; petals are ovate-oblong or oblong, with ciliate margins; stamens are 5, anthers are shorter than filaments, and there are no pseudostamens; style and ovary are densely hairy, with style shorter than ovary chambers; ovary has 5 chambers. The capsule is elliptical-oblong, 2-2.5 cm long, without lenticels. The seeds have wings at both ends, and the upper wing is usually longer than the lower wing. The flowering period is April-May, and the fruit ripening period is July.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in valley forests or near rivers and villages at an altitude of 560-1550m.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; astringent; slightly cold

【Functions and indications】 Clearing away heat and drying dampness; astringent; insecticidal. It is used to treat chronic diarrhea, chronic dysentery, intestinal wind and bloody stool, metrorrhagia, leucorrhea, spermatorrhea, leukorrhea, malnutrition, roundworms, sores and ringworms.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 6-15g; or made into pills or powder. For external use: take appropriate amount, decoct in water for washing; or grind into powder and apply on the affected area.

[Note] People with spleen and stomach deficiency, initial diarrhea, and metrorrhagia due to kidney yin deficiency should take with caution.
