【English Name】 Japanese Ardisia Herb

[Other names] Flatwood, Old but not big, Not out of the forest, Leaf bottom bead

[Source] The whole plant of Ardisia japonica (Hornst.) B1. of the Myrsinaceae family . Dig it up in summer and autumn when the stems and leaves are lush, remove the mud and sand, and dry it.

[Original form] An evergreen small shrub, 10 to 30 cm tall, with a creeping base, dark red in color, and slender adventitious roots. The stem is usually single, cylindrical, purple-brown on the surface, and covered with short glandular hairs. Leaves are alternate, often 3 to 7 leaves in a whorl at the stem end; elliptical or ovate, 3 to 7 cm long, 1.5 to 3 cm wide, mucronate at the apex, cuneate at the base, with sharp serrations on the edges, sparsely glandular dots on both sides, light red underneath, and hairy on the midrib; petioles densely covered with short glandular hairs. Inflorescence nearly umbel, axillary or terminal; calyx 5-lobed, with glandular dots; corolla 5-lobed, white, with reddish-brown glandular dots; stamens 5, shorter than corolla lobes, anthers with glandular dots on back. The drupe is spherical, red when ripe, with black glandular dots, and a persistent style and calyx. The flowering period is from June to September, and the fruiting period is from August to December.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in shady and wet places under forests, in valleys, and beside streams. Produced in provinces and regions south of the Yangtze River basin.

[Chemical composition] Contains ardisinol Ⅰ, Ⅱ, ardisin, dergenin, embelin, rapanone, quercetin, volatile oil, etc.

[Nature and flavor] Neutral in nature, spicy and slightly bitter in taste.

【Functions and indications】Resolving phlegm and relieving cough, promoting dampness and promoting blood circulation. Used for cough, blood in sputum, chronic bronchitis, jaundice caused by damp heat, and injuries from falls.
