[Source] This product is the dried mature fruit of Terminalia chebula Retz. or Terminalia chebula Retz . var. tomentella Kurt., a plant of the Combretaceae family. The fruits are harvested when they are ripe in autumn and winter, impurities are removed and they are sun-dried.

[Properties] This product is oblong or oval, 2 to 4 cm long and 2 to 2.5 cm in diameter. The surface is yellow-brown or dark brown, slightly shiny, with 5 to 6 longitudinal ridges and irregular wrinkles, and a round pedicel mark at the base. Solid quality. The flesh is 0.2 to 0.4 cm thick and is yellow-brown or yellowish brown. The core is 1.5 to 2.5 cm long, 1 to 1.5 cm in diameter, light yellow, rough and hard. The seeds are narrow and spindle-shaped, about 1 cm long and 0.2-0.4 cm in diameter; the seed coat is yellow-brown, and there are 2 cotyledons, which are white and overlap and coil with each other. Odorless, tastes sour and astringent then sweet.

[Identification] Take 3 g of the denuclearized powder of this product, add 10 ml of ethanol, ultrasonically treat for 20 minutes, and the supernatant is used as the test solution. Take another gallic acid reference substance and add ethanol to make a solution containing 0.5 mg per 1 ml as the reference substance solution. According to the thin layer chromatography method (Appendix Ⅵ B), 3 μl of each of the above two solutions were taken and spotted on the same silica gel G thin layer plate, and chloroform-ethyl acetate-formic acid (6:4:1) was used as the developing solvent. After development, the plate was taken out, dried, and sprayed with 2% ferric chloride ethanol solution. In the test sample chromatogram, a spot of the same color appears at the corresponding position in the reference sample chromatogram.
