[Source] It is the whole herb of the Umbelliferae plant , Celery .

[Original form] Annual or biennial herb, bare, with strong aroma. The stem is cylindrical, up to 0.7 to 1 meter high, branched at the top, with longitudinal ridges and nodes. The leaves are clustered from the roots, odd-pinnate compound leaves, obovate to rectangular, with petioles, 36-45 cm long, 2-3 pairs of leaflets, the petioles at the base are the longest, becoming shorter upwards, the leaflets are about 5 cm long and wide, 3-lobed, the lobes are triangular-rounded or pentagonal-rounded, the tip is sometimes 3-lobed again, and the edges have coarse teeth; the stem leaves are 3-lobed. Compound umbels are lateral or terminal; without involucre or involucrelets; rays are 7-16; pedicels are more than 20; flowers are small, bisexual, calyx teeth are not obvious; petals are 5, white, broadly ovate, with incurved tip; stamens are 5, anthers are small, ovate; pistil is 1, ovary is inferior, 2-chambered, with 2 inflorescences, shallowly lobed. The double-hanging fruit is nearly round to oval, the schizocarp is oval, about 1.2 mm long, with 5 obvious ribs, and an oil groove in the rib groove. The joint surface of the bicarp is nearly flat and also has 2 oil grooves. The schizocarp contains one seed. Flowering period is April. Fruiting period is June.

[Habitat distribution] Cultivated throughout the country.

[Chemical composition] The stems and leaves contain apigenin, bergamot lactone, volatile oil, organic acid, carotene, vitamin C, sugars, etc. The volatile oil contains α-phellandrene and phthalide derivatives such as butylphthalide, neophthalide, and serdanolide, which give celery its special smell. It is also said that dried celery contains an acidic yellow substance, temporarily called celery B, which exhibits green fluorescence when dissolved in alkaline solution and has a blood pressure lowering effect.

【Meridian】 "Compendium of Materia Medica": "enters the foot yangming and jueyin meridians."

【Functions and indications】 Calming the liver, clearing away heat, dispelling wind and removing dampness. Treat hypertension, dizziness, headache, red face and eyes, hematuria, and carbuncle.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 3-5 qian (1-2 liang for fresh); mash into juice or make into pills. For external use: mash and apply.

[Additional prescription] ① For the treatment of early primary hypertension: 4 liang of fresh celery, 3 qian of Aristolochia, 5 qian each of large and small thistle. Make into a fluid extract, take 10 ml each time, three times a day. (Shaanxi Herbs)
