The old branches are about 6 to 8 mm in diameter, with gray-brown bark with longitudinal stripes, small protruding lenticels, a small and hollow pith in the center of the cross section, and white wood; the young branches are thinner, with bluish-gray bark, a larger hollow pith, and the bark is easy to peel off. The leaves are arranged in whorls of 3 to 5, elliptical or ovate-oblong to lanceolate, entire, and often wrinkled and curled after drying. No smell, bitter taste.
