[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole herb of Passerine japonica, a plant of the Primulaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb. The rhizome is short and thick, with many fibrous roots. The stems are usually clustered, erect, thick and juicy, 30-50cm high, cylindrical, scattered with sparse black glandular dots, and usually unbranched. Leaves are opposite, with the 2 pairs at the stem end shortly spaced, often nearly whorled; short-petioled or nearly sessile, with middle petiole 6-20mm long; leaf blade elliptic, broadly elliptic to diamond-ovate, 6-18cm long, 3-10(-12.5)cm wide, with acute or short acuminate apex, broadly cuneate base, dark green above, pinkish green below, glabrous, densely covered with black glandular dots on both sides, 4-6 pairs of lateral veins, slightly raised below, reticular veins slender and inconspicuous; 1-2 pairs of leaves near stem base degenerate into scales. Inflorescence is a terminal raceme shortened to a nearly capitate shape; bracts are ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, 1-1.5cm long, densely covered with black glandular dots; pedicels are extremely short or up to 6mm long in the lower part of the inflorescence; calyx is 6-12mm long, 5-lobed nearly to the base, lobes are oblong-lanceolate, 2-3.5mm wide, densely covered with black glandular dots; corolla is yellow, 1.2-1.9cm long, the basal connate part is 4-5mm long, 5-lobed, lobes are oblong or oblong-lanceolate, obtuse or slightly pointed at the apex, with black glandular dots; stamens are 5, the lower part of the filament forms a tube about 3mm high, and the separated part is 3-4mm long; anthers are ovate; ovary is ovoid, and the style is about 7mm long. The capsule is nearly spherical, 3-4(-5)mm in diameter, and often has black glandular dots. The flowering period is May and the fruiting period is July.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in dense forests and wetlands beside valley streams, the upper limit of vertical distribution can reach 800m above sea level.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and dampness; reduces swelling and detoxifies. Mainly used for jaundice, edema, diarrhea, trauma, disease, furunculosis

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 10-15g. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash fresh product for application.
