[Source] It is the root or root bark of the Myrtaceae plant Erythroxylum bungeana . Harvested in summer and autumn.

[Original form] Shrub, 1 to 6 meters high. The stem is much branched; the bark is dark brown; the branchlets are square. The leaves are leathery, opposite, occasionally in whorls of 3, obovate or broadly ovate, 1-3 cm long, 0.5-3 cm wide, obtuse at apex, cuneate at base, entire, with small pinnate lateral veins, raised beneath, glabrous, with scattered glandular dots, and short-petiolated. The cymes are terminal or axillary, 2 to 4.5 cm long; the flowers are white; the calyx is obconical, with 4 short and blunt lobes; the petals are 4, separate; the stamens are numerous. The berries are oval, 6 to 10 mm in diameter, purple-black when ripe, and crowned with a persistent calyx eaves at the top; there is 1 seed inside. Flowering period is from May to June. The fruiting period is from September to October.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in sparse forests on hillsides, bushes and beside canyon streams. Distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou and other places.
