The leaves are clustered, nearly membranous, glabrous, with slender petioles, bright chestnut, and scaly at the base; the leaf blades are lanceolate, 8-15 cm long, 2.5-3.5 cm wide, and pinnate, with the top of the rachis often extending into a whip-like shape and rooting at the top; the pinnae are fan-shaped, connected to the petiole by a joint at the base, and with 2-5 shallow lobes on the outer edge; the lobes have clusters of sporangia at the top, the margins are entire, but the margins of the sterile parts have shallow wavy blunt teeth; the leaf veins are fan-shaped and forked, with the veinlets reaching the edge of the leaf, and the sporangia are borne at the tops of the veinlets on the margins of the lobes; the operculum is strip-shaped and oblong or nearly kidney-shaped.
