【Habitat distribution】Grows in mountains and fields. Distributed in southeastern my country. Produced in Guangdong and Guangxi.

【Properties】 Dry young branches are nearly square. The leaves are papery, elliptical-rectangular, about 8 to 20 cm long, with a long pointed tip and a base gradually narrowing into a petiole. They are dark red in color; the reticulated veins on the back are prominent and obvious. Or stipules may remain. Slight odor, light taste.

【Chemical composition】 Contains sterols, lactones, phenolic components and organic acids.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, detoxifies, dispels wind and dampness. Treat tonsillitis, diphtheria, sores, swelling, rheumatic pain, and bruises.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 1 to 2 liang (dry product). For external use: decoct in water for fumigation and washing, grind into powder and apply or mash for application.

[Additional prescription] ① Treat bleeding from knife wounds: mash or grind the leaves of the Rhizoma Cyperi into powder and apply it on the wound. (Luchuan Materia Medica)

[Clinical application] For the treatment of diphtheria: Take 5 jin of tender core or leaves of Rhizoma Cyperi, add 10 jin of water, and boil into 500 ml. For children under 1 year old, take 30-40 ml per day; for children 1-3 years old, take 40-50 ml; for children 4-5 years old, take 50-60 ml; for children 6-10 years old, take 70-100 ml per day. Add sugar and take in 2-3 times. A total of 118 cases were clinically observed, all of which were treated with Shandayan as the main drug (instead of diphtheria antitoxin), with other drugs appropriately combined. As a result, all cases were cured except one death. Generally, after 1 to 2 days of medication, clinical symptoms will improve, body temperature will drop, appetite will increase, cough will subside, bowel movements will become smooth, and the pseudomembrane will gradually fall off; all symptoms will disappear within 3 to 5 days.
