[Other names] Four-catfish perch, Ferry fish, Boat fish, Funian fish

[Source] Medicinal material source: the meat of Songjiang perch, a member of the family Sculpinidae.

[Original morphology] Songjiang perch has a flat front body, which gradually becomes cylindrical. It is usually about 12cm long. The head is large, with a wide and flat snout, long and slightly blunt, and the eyes are slightly small, located laterally and upward, with a concave middle and high convex edges, forming a ridge above the eyes. There is a parietal ridge on each side of the parietal occipital region, with a postocular ridge on the outer side and a subocular ridge below the eye. Each ridge has no spines. The mouth is wide, the upper jaw is long, and the upper and lower jaws, vomer and palatine bones all have villous teeth, and the left and right vomer teeth are connected to form a semi-lunar shape. The preoperculum has 4 spines, the upper one is larger. The body is scaleless and has many small protrusions. The lateral line is median, straight, and has about 37 lateral pores. Dorsal fin VIII-10-12, slightly connected at base, fin spines thin and weak. Anal fin 17-18, opposite to second dorsal fin. The pectoral fins are oblong, relatively wide, and can reach the second dorsal fin. The pelvic fin is located below the front edge of the pectoral fin base. The rear edge of the caudal fin is slightly rounded. The body is yellowish brown with 5-6 brown horizontal stripes on the sides. There are dark brown radial lines around the eyes. There is a large black spot in front of the dorsal fin spine. The gill cover membrane and base of the anal fin are orange-red. Each fin is yellowish with small black spots.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: It is a small fish that lives near the seabed and is carnivorous. Spawning occurs in spring, and 5-6 juvenile fish enter fresh water to grow and fatten. In winter, they swim to estuaries and offshore.

【Functions and indications】 Strengthens the spleen and replenishes Qi. It is mainly used for spleen deficiency, poor appetite, stomach pain, thin body and fatigue, loose stools, and malnutrition in children.
