Simple leaves are alternate; petioles are stout, 7.5-15mm long; leaf blades are thick leathery, oblanceolate to oblong, 6-18cm long, 2-6cm wide, with rounded apex, sometimes concave, base gradually narrowed, entire or with shallow teeth at the top, bright green above, and glabrous on both sides. The flowers are large, milky white, 7.5-12cm in diameter, rarely up to 15cm, solitary or clustered at the top of branchlets; bracteoles and sepals are arranged in a shingle-like manner, leathery, persistent; petals are 5-6, broadly obcordate, deeply lobed at the apex; stamens are numerous, filaments are connate only at the base; ovary is rectangular, 5-chambered, and the style is split at the apex. Capsule oblong, 5-sided, up to 3.5cm long. The seeds have wings at the tip.
