The efficacy and function of Gui Ding

[Other names] Cinnamon seeds (Baicaojing), cassia seeds (Zhongyaozhi), cinnamon cloves (Shanghai Medicinal Pieces Processing Standards).

[Source] It is the young fruit of cinnamon bark , a plant of the Lauraceae family. Pick unripe fruit branches from October to November, remove the branches and dry them in the sun.

[Habitat distribution] Mainly produced in Guangdong, Guangxi and other places.

[Properties] Dry and tender fruits are enclosed in persistent perianth and are in an inverted cone shape. The outer perianth is cup-shaped, 6 to 11 mm long, with a swollen apex, 6 shallowly fissured edges, a dark brown, wrinkled surface, and sometimes a fruit stalk at the base. After peeling off the persistent calyx, you can see the immature fruit, which is oblate, 3 to 4 mm in diameter, about 2 mm thick, yellow-brown and shiny. There is a slightly convex style remnant in the middle of the top, radial wrinkles on the bottom, and a raised ovary stalk in the center. The texture is soft and easy to crush. It has a fragrant aroma and slightly sweet taste. The ones with thick meat and strong flavor are better.

【Chemical composition】 Contains 0.07% bioalkali, 2.06% saponin, 2.51% tannin and volatile oil.

【Nature and flavor】Sweet, spicy, warm.

【Function and indication】 "Zhongyao Zhi": "Warms the middle and dispels cold, treats vomiting and hiccups caused by cold in the stomach."

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 1 to 2 qian; or grind into powder.

【Note】 "Chinese Materia Medica": "People with yin deficiency and excessive fire should not take this medicine."

[Additional prescription] Treat heart pain and ward off stomach pain caused by cold evil: Grind cinnamon into powder and take three grams of it with wine. (Bai Cao Mirror)
