[Original morphology] A perennial herbaceous twining vine with tuberous roots. The whole plant is hairless. Leaves are alternate; petiole is 7-14cm long; leaf blade is triangular-cordate, old leaves born at the lower part of stem are about 12cm long and 11cm wide, with obtuse apex, cordate base, green above and pink-green below, no exposed oil spots on both sides, 5-7 basal veins, net veins are not obvious, flowers are solitary or 2-3 flowers are in racemes borne in leaf axils or branch bases; pedicel is about 1.5cm long, with an ovate bracteole at the base; perianth is purple-blue, about 3.5cm long, tubular at the lower part, about 1.5cm long, swollen and spherical at the base, about 5mm in diameter, lip-shaped at the upper part, the upper lip is flattened to one side, oblong, about 2cm long, about 4mm wide, with 5 parallel veins, obtuse apex and small pointed tip, and the lower lip is very short; anther is ovate, about 1.5mm long; stamen column has 6 lobes at the apex. The capsule is obovate, with a decurrent base, about 7 cm long including the stalk, and has spots and 6 longitudinal ridges. The flowering period is from November to February of the following year, and the fruit ripening period is from June to October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: grows in limestone gaps or valley thickets.

[Properties] Identification of properties: The roots are spindle-shaped and multi-nodular, about 10 cm long and 4-6 cm in diameter. The surface is light brown, with numerous wart-like protrusions and irregular wrinkles, and residual fibrous roots. It is heavy and hard, not easy to break, and the cross section is dark red or light yellow-brown. It has a peculiar smell and tastes extremely bitter.

[Chemical composition] Contains aristolochic acid A, C, tuberosinone, tuberosinone-N-β-glucoside, 3,4-methylenedioxy-l0-hydroxy-aristololactam-N-β-D-glucoside, 3,4-methylenedioxy-10-hydroxy-aris-tololactam and 3,4-methylenedioxy-12-methoxy-aristololactam-N-β-D-glucoside.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies; regulates qi and relieves pain. It is used to treat damp-heat dysentery, diarrhea, abdominal pain, sore throat, tuberculosis, snake bites, and carbuncle.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 1.5-3g, add as needed for fresh product; or grind into powder, 0.5-1g each time, twice a day. For external use: grind appropriate amount into powder, mix with wine or vinegar and apply.
