[Source] Medicinal material source: The ripe fruit of Schisandra chinensis, a plant of the Schisandraceae family.

【Original form】 Deciduous woody vine. Young branches are purple or brown with edges, while old branches are gray-brown and nearly cylindrical. Petiole 1-3cm long; leaf blade obovate or elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, (4-)6-15cm long, (2-)3-7cm wide, apex acute or acuminate, base cuneate, margin with distinct glandular serrations or sometimes entire, dark green above, gray-green or pale beneath, with distinct reticular veins protruding beneath. Flowers are unisexual and dioecious; solitary or clustered in 2-3, dark red, 2-3 cm in diameter, with 5-8 tepals arranged in 2-3 whorls; 40-60 stamens, attached to an oblong receptacle, arranged in 4-7 rows; pistil carpels 60-100. The axis of the aggregate fruit inflorescence is thick, 6mm in diameter and 9-18cm long. The small berries are spherical and red when ripe. Seeds 2, reniform, with smooth seed coat. The flowering period is May-June, and the fruiting period is August-October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in mountain mixed woods at 2500-3400m.

【Properties】 Characteristics identification: The fruit is irregularly oval or nearly spherical, with a diameter of 3-5mm. The surface is reddish brown and slightly wrinkled, the peel is thin and translucent, and the flesh is thicker. The seeds are kidney-shaped, 2.5-3.5mm in diameter, yellow-brown, and slightly granular in surface. It has a light fragrance and tastes slightly salty and spicy.

[Chemical composition] The fruit contains schisandrin C, rubschisandrin, rnbschisantherin, deoxyschisandrin, schisanhenol acetate, schisanhenol B, schisanhenol, gomisin O, pregomisin, meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid, schizandrin A and B, and wuweizichum B.

[Pharmacological action] 1. Hepatoprotective effect: Oral administration of 5g/kg and 10g/kg of the alcohol extract of the fruit can significantly reduce the serum transaminase in mice with liver damage caused by carbon tetrachloride (CC14). It can also reduce the mortality rate of mice. The schisandra chinensis phenol contained in this product has the following effects: ① It has an inducing effect on liver microsomal cytochrome P-450. ②It has a reducing effect on serum transaminase in CC14-poisoned mice. ③It has an inhibitory effect on 14C-carbon tetrachloride-induced liver microsomal lipid peroxidation and covalent binding to microsomes; it also has an antagonistic effect on reactive oxygen free radical damage.
