Water plantain (scientific name: Scirpus validus Vahl) has a thick creeping rhizome with many fibrous roots. The culm is tall, cylindrical, and the uppermost leaf sheath has leaves. Leaves linear. Bract 1, an extension of the culm, erect, subulate, often shorter than the inflorescence, rarely slightly longer than the inflorescence; long lateral cymes simple or compound, pseudo-lateral; spikelets solitary or 2-3 clustered at the top of the radiating branches, ovate or oblong, with acute or obtuse apex, with many flowers; scales elliptic or broadly ovate, slightly concave at the apex, with mucrona, membranous; stamens 3, anthers linear, connective prominent; style medium long, stigmas 2, rarely 3, longer than style. The nutlets are obovate or elliptical, biconvex, rarely triangular, and about 2 mm long. Flowering and fruiting period is June to September. It is produced in many provinces of China and grows by lakes or in shallow ponds. It is also distributed in Korea, Japan, Australia, North and South America. It is cultivated for ornamental purposes in Beijing; in Yunnan, its stalks are often used as material for weaving umbrella mats.
