【English Name】Meliae Cortex.

[Source] Bark and root bark of Melia toosendan Sieb.et Zucc., a plant of the Meliaceae family.

【Plant morphology】 Tree. The bark is gray-brown with longitudinal grooves, and the young parts are densely covered with star-shaped scales. Bi-pinnate compound leaves are alternate; leaflets are oblong; flowers are lavender or purple; there are 5 to 6 sepals and petals, and the disk is annular; the number of stamens is twice that of petals, and the filaments are connected into a tube; there is one pistil, and the ovary is superior, bottle-shaped, and has 6 to 8 chambers. The drupe is oval or nearly spherical, yellow or yellow-brown; there are 3 to 5 seeds; the seeds are flat and oblong, black. The flowering period is from March to April, and the fruiting period is from September to November.

[Distribution] It grows in humid places in sparse forests, distributed in Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan and other places.

[Harvesting and processing] Peel the skin and dry it in spring and autumn, or remove the rough skin and dry it in the sun.

[Properties of the medicinal material] The bark is slightly grooved, and a few are rolled. The outer surface is gray-brown or gray-brown, rough, with longitudinal cracks and fine transverse lines, and transverse lenticels are visible. The one without the rough skin is light yellow, and the inner surface is yellow-white. It is tough, not easy to break, the cross section is fibrous, flaky and can be peeled off. Odorless, bitter taste. The root bark is long and narrow, irregularly strip-shaped, rolled, grooved, 2 to 3 mm thick, and the cork layer is often scaly and brick red after peeling. The rest is the same as the bark.

【Effects and Functions】Slightly toxic. Deworming and treating ringworm. It is an anthelmintic.

[Clinical Application] The dosage is 4.5~9 grams, decocted or taken orally or made into pills or powder; for external use, appropriate amount can be decocted in water for washing or ground into powder for application to the affected area. It is used to treat ascariasis, pinworm infestation, and abdominal pain caused by worms; it is also used externally to treat itching caused by scabies.

[Main ingredients] Contains azadirachtin and toosendanin, azadirachtin, azadirachtin, kaempferol, azadirachtin and tannin. In addition, it contains β-sitosterol, n-triacontane and water-soluble ingredients.

[Contraindications] People with weak constitution, liver and kidney dysfunction, pregnant women and those with weak spleen and stomach should take it with caution.
