The surface of the medicinal material of Lithospermum officinale is yellow-green, smooth or with longitudinal stripes, obvious nodes, darker color, and membranous leaf sheaths on the nodes. Fleshy, juicy and easy to break. It has a slight odor, tastes slightly bitter with a sweet aftertaste, and feels sticky when chewed.

Dendrobium annularis: It is slender and cylindrical, often bent or coiled into a ball, 15 to 35 cm long, 0.1 to 0.3 cm in diameter, and the internodes are 1 to 2 cm long. The surface is golden yellow, shiny, and has fine vertical lines. The texture is flexible and solid, with a relatively flat cross section. Odorless, light taste.

Functions and indications: Nourishes the stomach and produces body fluid, nourishes yin and clears away heat. It is used for yin damage and body fluid deficiency, dry mouth and thirst, poor appetite and retching, deficiency fever after illness, and blurred vision.

Dosage and Administration: For oral use: decoct in water, 6-15g (double the amount for fresh product), preferably simmer for a long time; or make into paste; or make into pills or powder.

Contraindications: Patients with early stage of fever whose Yin has not been damaged, patients with damp-heat disease whose dryness has not turned into dryness, and patients with spleen and stomach deficiency (referring to those with low gastric acid secretion) are prohibited from taking this medicine.

Deficiency of stomach yin and loss of body fluid due to febrile disease. This product is good at nourishing stomach yin, promoting fluid production and quenching thirst, and can also clear stomach heat. It is mainly used to treat symptoms such as damage to body fluid caused by fever, thirst, dry tongue and black coating. It is often used together with Radix Trichosanthis, fresh Rehmannia glutinosa, Ophiopogon japonicus, etc., as in the method of clearing away heat and preserving body fluid in "Treatise on Seasonal Diseases". It can be used together with raw rehmannia, ophiopogon japonicus, scutellaria baicalensis, etc. to treat epigastric pain, swollen and painful gums, and mouth ulcers caused by stomach heat and yin deficiency.

Kidney Yin deficiency syndrome. This product can nourish kidney yin and reduce false fire. It is suitable for symptoms such as blurred vision, weak muscles and bones, yin deficiency and excessive fire, bone steaming and fatigue fever caused by kidney yin deficiency. For those with kidney yin deficiency and blurry eyes, it is often used together with wolfberry, rehmannia root, dodder seed and other products, such as Shihu Yeguang Pills (Yuan Ji Qi Wei). For those with kidney yin deficiency and weak tendons and bones, it is often used together with cooked rehmannia, cornus officinalis, eucommia ulmoides, Achyranthes bidentata and other products that can nourish the liver and kidneys and strengthen the tendons and bones. For those with kidney deficiency, hyperactivity of fire, bone steaming and fatigue fever, it is advisable to use it together with raw rehmannia, wolfberry, phellodendron, picrorhizome and other products that can nourish kidney yin and reduce deficiency heat.
