Origin of the name: Li Ao, a scholar in the Tang Dynasty, once wrote "The Biography of Polygonum multiflorum". Polygonum multiflorum was originally the name of a person. Later, Li Shizhen changed the original "Polygonum multiflorum" to "Polygonum multiflorum" based on historical records.

It is slightly warm in nature and tastes bitter, sweet and astringent.

According to Compendium of Materia Medica, one of the names of Polygonum multiflorum is Ye Miao, another is Jiao Teng, another is Ye Jia, another is Di Jing and the fifth is He Shou Wu. It originally came from Shunzhou, now Jinxing County, and can be found on all the islands in the south of the Yangtze River.

Odor (root) bitter, astringent, slightly warm, non-toxic.

Indications

1. Osteoarthritis (pain in the waist and knees, itching all over the body, and difficulty walking). Use one pound of Polygonum multiflorum (the ones with patterns are the best) and Achyranthes bidentata, soak them in good wine for seven nights, take them out, dry them, mash them, add jujube meat and make them into balls as big as walnuts. Take 30 to 50 pills each time. Take on an empty stomach with wine.

2. Pain in the skin (not knowing where the pain is). Use Polygonum multiflorum powder and ginger juice to make a paste and apply it. After application, wrap it with cloth and iron the soles of shoes over fire.

3. Spontaneous sweating. Use Polygonum multiflorum powder, mix it with saliva, and seal it on the navel.

4. Intestinal wind and bleeding. Use 2 liang of He Dao Wu and grind it into powder. Take 2 qian each time, before meals, with rice soup.

5. Wounds and bleeding. Apply Hedaowu powder on the affected area and stop. With special effects.

6. For scrofula and tuberculosis (whether broken or not, it can cure any part down to the chest), wash the root of Polygonum multiflorum, chew it raw every day, and mash the leaves to apply to the affected area.

7. Carbuncle and ulcer. There is no limit to the amount of Polygonum multiflorum you can use. Boil it over a gentle or strong fire, add an equal amount of wine, and boil it a few more times. Save the wine and drink it at any time. Take the residue, dry it, grind it into powder, and mix it with flour cooked with wine to make it into balls as big as walnuts. Take 30 pills each time, on an empty stomach, with warm wine. After recovery, you can take the medicine as usual.

8. Wind plague. Use one pound of Polygonum multiflorum (preferably large ones with patterns), soak it in rice washing water for seven days, repeatedly steam and dry it several times, add four ounces of sesame, steam and dry it again, grind it into powder, take two cents each time, with wine, twice a day.

9. Scabies. Use equal parts of Polygonum multiflorum and Qu leaves, boil them in water to make a thick soup for bathing, which can relieve pain and build muscle. Bathing with a decoction of Polygonum multiflorum stems and leaves is also effective.

The seedlings are like dead wood, with shiny leaves, and are shaped like peach and willow trees. There are male and female plants: the male seedlings are yellow, while the female seedlings are yellow-red. The roots are no more than three feet long, and the seedlings and vines intertwine at night. Its root tastes sweet, warm and non-toxic. Poria cocos is used to treat five types of hemorrhoids, diseases of the waist and knees, heart pain caused by cold, weight loss due to long-term fatigue and phlegm, it can increase muscle strength, benefit the essence, strengthen the qi, keep the complexion healthy, and blacken the hair to prolong life. Polygonum multiflorum is mostly distributed in low-lying and humid tropical areas. Its effects are miraculous and outstanding. The most famous legend is the legend that Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Immortals, ascended to heaven after accidentally eating it. In Lu Xun's "From the Baicao Garden to Sanwei Bookstore", it is mentioned that eating the human-shaped roots can make one become immortal. Of course, this is superstition.
